The Ancient Greeks developed very distinctive architectural styles, including three different types of columns. The simplest type of column they invented was the Doric column, which didn't have a base. The column that did have a base was the Ionic column, which also had scrolls carved at the top. The most decorative column, the Corinthian column, had an elaborate capital, that was surrounded by carvings of acanthus leaves. Ancient Greece is also well known for its beautiful temples, mostly built during the Classical period, and also the Greek Dark Ages. Through many centuries, ancient Greek architecture changed and grew significantly. The ancient Greeks, and Alexander the Great, also used architecture as an important way to spread Greek culture and to show that they were in charge in conquered countries. As a result of this, ancient Greek architectural elements are found all over the world today.
